  • Adoption Counselling | England | Cosmos Counselling

Adoption Counselling Approved Adoption Counselling "In December 2010, the law changed so that only counsellors and psychotherapists registered as an adoption support agency (ASA) with Ofsted are able to offer specialist adoption services. These amendments to the Adoption and Children's Act of 2002 were designed to ensure that the one in four UK individuals affected by adoption in some way, are provided with support and services from practitioners who hold the proper qualifications and experience. The introduction of this legislation now means that any counsellor working with a client for whom any aspect of adoption is the main focus, must be registered with Ofsted (or RQIA in Northern Ireland) and subject to regular inspections. You can check an individual's registration on Ofsted's website...Some counsellors may offer adoption counselling under contract with an Adoption support agency, such as Barnardo's Link Counselling Service or PAC-UK (in Northern Ireland these organisations are called Voluntary adoption agencies)." The Counselling Directory (2018). How could counselling help with adoption? If you have been affected in some way by the experience of adoption whether as an adoptee, an adoptive family or as a birthparent of an adopted child then you may benefit from seeking help from an Approved Adoption Counsellor or psychotherapist such as myself. The emotional impact of the adoption process is understood to be life-long. I can help people to: understand and explore the way they are feeling develop new coping strategies find ways of managing stress learn more about the life long effects of adoption. Therapy with me is always tailored to each individual's particular needs. I draw on person centred and psychodynamic therapies in particular including Attachment Theory. These are commonly used in this area because they are based upon an individuals past thoughts and perceptions and how these affect their current thinking and behaviour. For example, a depressed adult who was adopted as a child may benefit from exploring their attachment patterns - a modality that focuses on an individual's unconscious deep-rooted responses to care givers that were developed during childhood. Using this understanding, clients can then seek alternative behavioural responses to current experiences that may be causing them distress.

  • Children / Young People / Family | England | Cosmos Counselling

Young People / Family Counselling When counselling young people I can offer a safe and secure environment to work in. Irrespective of age, sessions are confidential and cannot be discussed with parents / guardians unless prior agreement has been made . This means I will clarify with the young person that it is their wish for information to be shared or discussed. In such times I may be in a more mediating role between parent and child than that of counsellor to both parties which could result in a conflict of interest. Separate meetings between all of us can be arranged or more often, parents are invited to join our session for the last 20 minutes or so. If there is a need to break confidentiality due to serious harm to self or others then I have to take the appropriate action. On occasion and with the agreement of carers and school, it can be arranged for me to work within the school environment which can be less disruptive to a young person's routine. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please do not hesitate to speak to me. Family / Attachment Focused Therapy (AFT) I can offer Attachment Focused Therapy to families who are struggling to build a positive bond with their child or wish to strengthen their bond. It is an integrated therapeutic intervention which combines well researched methods of attachment theory and trauma recovery models along with aspects of creative arts therapies and play therapy in order to encourage growth and change in the relationship between the parent and child. The focus of the work is the relationship between the parent/carer and child. The parent/carer become engaged in activities with their child which encourage positive emotional connections and it is through this development of trust in the primary attachment figure that attachment patterns can be altered and lives transformed. Talk and Creat ivity My aim, as an integrative therapist, is to tailor therapy to each individual's or couple's needs – it is not a ‘one size fits all’ approach. Integrative therapy respects that we are all unique individuals. I have found, when talking is not enough, using different art media or objects can open up communication particularly for clients who find it hard to articulate their feelings verbally. Young people particularly respond to working creatively. With this in mind, a 50 minute session can include the use of: active imagination apps drama, role-play etc to articulate feelings dream work genograms Mindfulness including breathing and grounding exercises mood cards painting, drawing, clay work etc to express feelings sand tray stones, shells or buttons talk toys and games visualisations - guided imagery written word e.g. letters, diary, poetry etc

  • EMDR Therapy | cosmos-counselling

EMDR Therapy Why choose EMDR therapy? Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is one of the most significant, exciting and innovative developments for decades in the treatment of psychological trauma related conditions. It is supported by extensive research and recommended for the treatment of PTSD in national and international guidelines including the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the World Health Organisation (WHO). EMDR is a powerful psychological treatment method developed by clinical psychologist, Dr Francine Shapiro. EMDR can treat psychological trauma arising from experiences as diverse as war and conflict, childhood abuse and / or neglect, natural disaster, assault, road traffic accidents and workplace accidents. Recent research also suggests EMDR is effective in treating a number of other conditions including anxiety disorders, depression and chronic pain. EMDR has also been found to be of benefit to children as well as adults. What is EMDR? EMDR seems to directly influence the way that the brain functions. It helps to restore normal ways of dealing with problems (i.e. information processing). Following successful EMDR treatment, memories of such events are no longer painful when brought to mind. What happened can still be recalled, but it is no longer upsetting. EMDR appears to mimic what the brain does naturally during dreaming or REM (Rapid Eye Movements) sleep. EMDR can be thought of as an inherently natural therapy which assists the brain in working through distressing material utilising a natural process. This is called Adaptive Information Processing. EMDR therapists help clients reprocess their traumatic memories by using a method that involves repeated left-right (bilateral) stimulation of the brain while noticing different aspects of the traumatic memory. It is believed that the bilateral stimulation of EMDR creates biochemical changes in the brain that aid processing of information. Neuroscience suggest that this occurs in the Limbic system, where the Amygdala and Hippocampus are located. EMDR therapy normally takes place in 90 minute sessions in order to allow plenty of time to process a memory.

  • What is counselling? | England | Cosmos Counselling

What is counselling? Counselling is a talking therapy. In 50 minute sessions it offers you the opportunity to explore personal issues in a private setting with someone who has no other role in your life. Talking things over with a trained listener can offer a new perspective. It is a joint process that requires motivation and active involvement, helping you explore feelings, thoughts and personal experiences in order to work towards finding your own solutions. Sometimes there isn't a specific problem but you may simply want to talk about feeling unhappy or confused. You don't have to be in crisis or have no emotional or mental strength left before you ask for help. It all remains confidential. On the rare occasion confidentiality is broken, as there are certain legal constraints, I will make every effort to discuss it with you, the client, first. The number of sessions undertaken varies according to individual need. It can be anything from providing short term, brief focused crisis intervention to long term, open ended psychotherapy towards a journey of self-discovery. At Cosmos Counselling in Liphook, I work with young people and adults , including couples, facing a wide range of challenges and I am happy to discuss any problems you or your young person maybe experiencing. I work with issues such as: Addictions Adoption Affairs and betrayals Anger Anxiety Body image Childhood issues Depression Emotional, physical and sexual abuse Family issues Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) Lack of meaning or direction Loneliness Loss and bereavement Low self esteem Motivational / confidence building Parenting Phobias Redundancy and work issues Relationship issues Sex and intimacy Sexuality and identity Stress Trauma + cPTSD Should I feel I am not the right counsellor for you, or family therapy may be more helpful, I will help in finding the care and support you need elsewhere. I operate an equal opportunities policy and do not discriminate against individuals on the basis of age, marital status, physical disability, gender, sexual orientation, race, social origins, political or religious beliefs. " It is not our task to solve another's problems, or take away another's pain. All lessons of life are necessary and produce growth - and therefore joy" - Letters from the Cosmos

  • Frequently Asked Questions | England | Cosmos Counselling

Frequently Asked Questions How long will counselling take? This depends entirely on the individual or couple. Once the counselling process begins there is no pressure on you to continue indefinitely. Some clients may attend for just one session and get what they need, others for 6-12 weeks and some people choose much longer. Regular reviews to discuss and check that you are getting what you need are useful. Counselling can be stopped at any time, but it can be helpful to have some notice so that we can review and evaluate our time together and bring our work to an end. Can I just have a one-off appointment? Of course. For some people a one-off session may be all they need at that point in their lives. How often will I see you? We would agree to meet, ideally weekly , at the same time each week. Can I see you for longer, have 2 sessions in a week or phone and email support? Yes, if there are times when you may feel a longer session or 2 sessions per week are helpful, we can contract for this. I can offer email or text support or a regular phone call should you need it for a particularly challenging period of time. Do you do telephone, online or video appointments? I am available for clients by phone and online / video e.g. Skype, Teams and WhatsApp since COVID-19. What happens if I can't make an agreed appointment? I require 24 hours notice of cancellation if you cannot make your appointment. I do charge if there is not 24 hours notice as I cannot offer the time to anyone else. The whole 50 or 60 minutes belongs to you and I will be present for all of that time . If you arrive part way through your session, I will be able to see you for the remainder of the time. If your circumstances change and the session time is no longer suitable, I will aim to offer you an alternative time. There is no charge for agreed absences such as holiday. I will be available for you with the exception of holidays and occasional times when I may attend further training or a conference. I will give you as much notice as possible if I am unable to make a session. In the event where I need to cancel your session because of illness, I will notify you as soon as I can, and will try to offer you an alternative time. There will be no charge should I cancel our appointment. When are you available for appointments? Monday 09:00 - 20:00 Tuesday 09:00 - 20:00 Wednesday 09:00 - 20:00 Thursday 08:30 - 20:00 Friday 09:00 - 19:30 What are your fees? Individual therapy is £50:00 per 50 minute session. Child, young person and student fee is £45:00 per 50 minute session. Couple therapy is £65:00 per 60 minute session. EMDR is £70 per 90 minute session. I offer a small number of reduced fee appointments to those on a limited income. Please ask. How can I pay? Cash, cheque or BACs per session. Is your service really confidential? Yes. Everything we discuss is completely confidential and will not be passed to another person without your knowledge, with the exception of planned serious harm to self or others, or breaches of Child Protection Procedures. As mentioned before, I would always discuss this with you and make every effort to obtain your permission. This extends to after our time together has finished too. I undertake regular supervision and confidentiality extends to all supervision sessions with a qualified supervision. I am an accredited member of the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) and operate within their Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions (2018). What does accreditation mean? BACP accreditation is a widely-valued quality status for practitioners, organisations and training courses, designed to recognise the achievement of high standards of knowledge, experience and development. Do you make notes and what do you do with them? Brief notes are made after each session in order to recall information and support our work together. Notes are kept securely, according to the Data Protection Act (2018). Notes are not kept on a computer. Right to Privacy Please see Privacy Policy. I am to fully comply with the United Kingdom General Data Protection Regulation, which became effective on the 1st January 2021. The law covers the key principles along with rights and obligations when processing personal data in the United Kingdom and sits alongside the Data Protection Act 2018.
